Life In California Exhibition

An Exhibition of the work of artists and members of The Escondido Art Association.

In this exhibit we strive to create California’s unique identity represented by the diversity in its people, landscapes and culture. The miles of coastline, unique desert environs, majestic Sierra Mountain range and proximity to Mexico’s people and cultural influences have been inspiration for countless artists.

An offspring of the Mexican Muralist Movement was the Chicano Muralist Movement of the 1960’s which is still active today. Chicano Park in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood contains the largest collection of Chicano murals in the world and is a National Historic Landmark.

The early 20th century saw the rise of California Impressionism and Plein-Air painting, a school of artists who worked outdoors to capture the intense southern California sunlight and natural beauty in lush, chromatic paintings. English-born artist David Hockney, one of California's most notable painters, famously depicted the sun-drenched Los Angeles lifestyle, with his iconic paintings of swimming pools capturing the hedonistic energy and allure of Southern California.

Represented in this exhibition are local artists working in different media and styles interpreting their personal view and connection to California’s people and landscapes. We hope you find Life in California not only enjoyable but engaging as an artistic journey through our beautiful state.
