How To Volunteer as a Docent

Artist members who submit artwork monthly are encouraged to serve as a Gallery Docent for a 3-hour shift during the month of their exhibition. (Or, you may choose to pay a $10 opt-out fee instead.)

Docents help greet visitors, answer simple questions, and keep the gallery welcoming. Training is provided, and it’s a fun and easy way to connect with the community while learning more about what’s happening at the Escondido Art Association.

How to Prep Paintings for Hanging in Gallery

Follow Instructions Carefully

The Escondido Art Association has strict hanging requirements. Artwork that does not meet these standards will not be accepted.

1. Canvas Sides – If your painting is not framed, the visible sides of the canvas must be painted.

2. Hardware – Use D-rings for hanging. (Screw eyes are only acceptable if placed inside a framed canvas and are large enough to support the weight.)

3.  Wire Attachment – Thread the hanging wire twice through each D-ring, then wrap the end securely around the wire.

4. Safety Wrapping – Cover all wire ends with tape to prevent injury to the hanging team.

5. Wire Placement – When pulled upward, the center of the wire should be about 2 inches from the top of the frame.

6. Recommended Wire – Use #6 plastic-coated, stranded stainless steel picture wire for best support.

Note: Hanging wires, D-rings, and hooks can usually be found at local hardware stores (such as Home Depot) or in the framing department at craft stores like Michael’s.
